AUDITION CRITERIA for choral members
Able to pay dues over time (we unfortunately do not have a scholarship fund right now)
Preferred education in music, minor in music, AA degree or similar experience
Sufficient knowledge of music theory - keys, chords, intervals, modes, and ability to count out complex rhythms
Ear training on tonal and atonal melodies, diatonic harmonies, and recognition of all intervals
Capable of hearing strong overtones
Excellent intonation
Able to sing with rounded vowels
Able to sing with and without vibrato
Able to sing softly with technique
Must be able to use a tuning fork
Sufficient study of the voice (voice lessons)
Multiple years of experience singing in a chorus
Sufficient at sight reading
Knowledge of solfeggio
Sufficient at romantic languages
Some knowledge of IPA
BQ is seeking singers who can adhere to these requirements:
Commitment to Excellence: Applicants should adhere to agreements made in the audition process, i.e. committing to solo or group voice lessons, improving musicianship/theory skills, sight reading, historical understanding of style, improving stamina, breath, and seeking out repair from any physical block to freely using their instrument (allergies, nodules etc).
Passion and Culture: A deep commitment to choral music, ensemble singing, and creating art at a distinguished level is essential.
Stylistic Versatility: Singers need to be willing and capable to perform a wide range of repertoire, from Renaissance to the 20th century, with stylistic conviction and a general understanding of historical performance practice.
Reading Music: The ability to read music on a neutral syllable or solfeggio is expected, as is the capacity to learn repertoire quickly and independently.
Discretion of Scheduling: Applicants are expected to handle the rigors of showing up on time and avoiding scheduling conflicts with rehearsal, dress rehearsal and performance.
Commitment to Community: Volunteer singers should have a desire to see their art benefit their community and willingly participate in educational events or inclusive community events.
AUDITION CRITERIA for paid positions
Minimum Bachelor’s of Music degree or comparable experience
Preferred Master’s of Music in Vocal Performance
Ample experience singing in choirs and knowledge of historical styles.
Experience singing as a soloist
Relative or perfect pitch and excellent intonation
Able to sing with and without vibrato
Comfortably strong sight reading capability
Commitment to changing vocal technique or aesthetic to match the artistic endeavor of each piece
Some experience of and willingness to using extended techniques for contemporary music
Comfortable using solfeggio
Commitment to learning music on your own and showing up prepared to rehearse
Able to sing in many languages
Thorough understanding of IPA
Able to teach music (lead sectionals at an extra fee).
Must provide resume, recording and 2 references
